Welcome to Finland! Luckily, you have chosen the best time to visit us! Finnish summer – full of light, warmth, beautiful nature and happy faces. (Let's not talk about Finland in November.)
Your first impression might be a bit shocking: what is this language that you don't understand the heck about? It sounds soft and funny, and you might have heard that it is written the same way as spoken. However, if you happen to understand a word in written text, you'll probably have difficulties in hearing it from speaker's endless wordflow. But don't be afraid – TAMK offers you a chance that you don't want to miss! TAMK Summer School and Basics of Finnish.
During the course, we have main focus on producing and understanding the everyday language. We talk a lot about Finnish traditions, habits, food, educational system etc. You'll also experience a lot of stuff yourself since the course is not about dusty books and cramming, but an interesting dive into a whole new culture and language in its own environment.
We do have one book though (that will be Oma suomi 1), but it is colourful, well-structured, culturally very informative and, what's the best, strictly focused on everyday basic language that you can right away take advantage of. You don't have to buy the book unless you want to. TAMK Library will reserve them for us.
After completing the course you will reach level A1 (CEFR) in Finnish language. Besides, you'll have all the possibilities to survive in Finland and even enjoy your stay – whether it's two weeks, three months, a year or a lifetime.
