Study contents

The programme is an internationally competitive, full-time Bachelor of Business Administration programme (BBA), taught in English. It is accredited by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, and accepts both Finnish and international students.

First Year - Basics of International Business

During the first year of studies, the objective is to give the students a broad perspective on the business operations of a company, including computing and communication skills. Students learn to apply theory in practice right from the start, as they establish and operate a virtual Practice Enterprise. The learning model helps students to combine theoretical business studies with learning-by-doing.

Students develop their working life skills and competences by working in their Practice Enterprise, and during the collaborative learning sessions under the guidance of a Team Coach. The coaching teachers have an on-going role in promoting team learning skills, and individual learning, by supervising the students' team work in their Practice Enterprises throughout the first year. With their multicultural teams, the students learn together and practice their collaboration and communication skills.

The contents of the first year study are presented in detail in separate module guides, which are distributed to students at the beginning of the academic year.

Second Year – Choosing the Fields of Specialization

At the end of the first year, the students start to plan their own career paths. The second year will give the students a deeper insight into the functions of an internationalizing company.

Students choose two specialization modules of 15 ECTS credits out of the following 7 options:

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Experience Economy and Tourism
  • Human Resource Management and Leadership
  • Innovation Management and Business Development
  • Marketing
  • Supply Chain Management

Third Year – Exchange Studies and Practical Training

During the third year, the Finnish students choose a foreign partner university for their semester of study abroad (= 4 - 6 months). The International Business Programme has some 130 partner universities all over the world. In addition, the Finnish students will spend a further 5 months abroad in a practical training placement. It can be done anywhere in the world; students are free to arrange their training placements to suit their own international career plans.

International students can complete the whole degree in Finland, but they can also choose to go for an exchange study period and do their practical training outside of Finland.

Fourth Year – Bachelor's Thesis and Developing Professional Expertise

Ideally, the organization where students do their practical training will also commission their Bachelor's Thesis, which is a development project requiring them to apply their knowledge and expertise to solve a specific problem for the company concerned.

The objective of the Bachelor's Thesis is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, and in this way to produce topical solutions for the organization's needs. The thesis is written following the practices of scientific reporting and with emphasis on practical solutions for existing problems within the organization concerned. It can be a planning or development task, a research, a product, or a guide done for a company, a branch of local government, or other organizations. Ideally, the students should find a practical case for their final thesis during the practical training. Writing the Bachelor's Thesis will take from four to six months, depending on the topic and level of difficulty.

Teaching is carried out using a variety of learning methods, such as:

  • contact teaching
  • virtual studies
  • blended learning
  • case studies
  • development discussions
  • research and development assignments with companies
  • intensive programmes with partner universities
  • independent studies
  • team-based assignments
  • individual company projects
  • portfolios

A key element of the programme is a required period of study / training abroad.

Structure of studies

The scope of the degree programme is worth 210 credits (ECTS) and it takes 3.5 years to complete. If you plan your studies carefully, it may be possible to graduate sooner.

The BBA Degree Programme consists of the following parts:

  • Basic and Professional Studies (145 ECTS credit points) including a required International Student Exchange of 4 - 6 months,
  • Free-Choice Studies (20 ECTS credit points),
  • International Practical Training (30 ECTS credit points)
  • Bachelor's Thesis (15 ECTS credit points)

For Finnish nationals, both a semester of study abroad and a practical training placement abroad are required parts of the degree Programme. For the students of other nationalities, study and training periods abroad are highly recommended but not required.

Final project

The objective of the Bachelor's Thesis (15 ECTS credit points) is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, and in this way to produce topical solutions for the organization's needs.

Original certificate delivery instructions are given in the admission letter. TAMK may withdraw the admission if you do not deliver the original certificates by the set date or if you have given false information.

One study place

You can only accept one study place among Bachelor's/Master's degrees in Finland starting during the same academic semester (1 Aug-31 Dec/1 Jan-31 Jul). Although you register as absent or quit your studies, you cannot accept another study place during the same academic semester.

Applicants who are accepted to the degree programme which they placed in highest place in the order of preference on the application form, cannot anymore at confirmation stage choose a study place from lower preference options.

This is a national policy to ensure that as many applicants as possible get a new study place annually.

Enroll for studies

When accepting the study place, you have to also register as present or absent to your studies at TAMK in Studyinfo.fi portal or by TAMK's own eForm.

According to Finnish legislations, first-year student may register as absent for the first academic year for the following reasons only:

1) Finnish military service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women's Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);

2) maternity, paternity or parental leave;

3) the student cannot begin studies due to being incapacitated by personal illness or injury.

If you register as absent, you must prove the legal grounds for your absence. TAMK requires you to present these documents by 10 July 2018 (3 pm Finnish time). Documents must be delivered to TAMK Admissions Office.

If you register as absent in your first academic year, but fail to deliver sufficient clarification regarding the grounds for your absence within the deadline, you will lose your right to study.

Appeals

If you believe that there has been a mistake in the student selection or the set admission criteria have not been applied correctly, you can submit a written request for rectification of the student selection decision addressed to TAMK Board of Examiners within 14 days after the student selection results have been published.

Always check the admission criteria of the programme first and contact to TAMK Admissions Office before writing the request. If the issue cannot be solved by the admissions officials, you are advised to submit a written request for rectification.

Form and content of request for an administrative review:

The document requesting an administrative review shall indicate the particular decision for which the review is requested, the amendment that is being sought in the review requested and the grounds for requesting the review. (Administrative Procedure Act, Section 49d)
