It is also possible to establish your own business.

Occupational titles: environmental engineer, environmental planner, environmental coordinator, environmental manager, project manager, project engineer, project coordinator.

Postgraduate study opportunities

The Bachelor of Engineering degree gives you eligibility for Master's degree programmes in many universities offering programmes in environmental science, management or engineering. There is a possibility to continue all the way to the PhD level.

Study contents

The build-up of your skills and competences is divided into four annual themes.

First year: During the first study year, you start to create a strong foundation in natural sciences, understanding the structure and function of the environment, and applying environmental thinking in engineering. You will gain and apply basic skills in environmental sampling and analyses, and be conversant with the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes. You will achieve the competence to work as an assistant in simple, routine environmental monitoring and management duties.

Second year: The second study is year is devoted to strengthening general engineering skills and gaining skills in environmental engineering and management practices. You will have the competence to assist under supervision in monitoring and management projects in the environmental engineering industry. You will become familiar with waste management, environmental emissions, environmental monitoring, and industrial processes. You will also be well informed about occupational health and safety regulations and other working life tools, and will thus be ready to start your practical training.

Third year: During the third study year you continue deepening your environmental engineering skills and building competence in project work and practical environmental engineering tasks. You will have the competence to work as a team member in environmental monitoring and management projects and various jobs in the environmental engineering industry. It is possible and recommended to complete the second part of your practical training abroad. You will be capable of applying and deepening your knowledge and skills in practical areas of working life.

Fourth year: The fourth study year is time for advancing your competence in selected study modules and preparing yourself for working life challenges. This is the last study year, after which you will have the competence to monitor and report on environmental quality (air, water, soil) for industry and public administration bodies. You will be competent to work in an international environment, develop industrial processes in environmental monitoring, and carry out environmental management and development tasks. You will gain specialized expertise in some field of energy and environmental engineering, and will be capable of developing the field for a company or organization.

Structure of studies

The extent of the degree programme is 240 ECTS credits and it takes four years to complete.

The structure of the studies:

  • Basic and Professional Studies (180 credits)
  • Practical Training (30 credits)
  • Bachelor's Thesis (15 credits)
  • Free-choice Studies (15 credits)

For more specific information, please look TAMK's Study Guide.

Final project

The aim of the Bachelor's thesis (15 credits) is to develop and demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge and expertise to a task pertaining to your professional studies. The task undertaken has to conform to the needs of working life, and develop professional practices, knowledge and skills.

The second part of your practical training period is a good time to look for the thesis project. It is recommended that the project should address a challenge facing the organization where you do the practical training. There are also other alternatives; the thesis can be done as part of TAMK's research, development and innovation operations, or as a project for an internal or external customer.

Internationalization

As a TAMK student you have the opportunity to complete part of your degree abroad in one of TAMK's partner universities, of which we have over 300 in more than 50 countries. Practical training can also be done anywhere in the world; you are free to arrange your training placements to suit your own international career plans. For Finnish nationals, both a semester of study abroad and a practical training placement abroad are required parts of the degree programme.  For students of other nationalities, study and training periods abroad are highly recommended but not required.

The degree programme is an inspiring and multicultural learning environment. Half of the students are Finnish and the other half comprises international students from other European countries, Asia, North America, South America, and Africa. Other means of guaranteeing a truly international and multicultural study experience are to immerse yourself in language studies, peer tutoring for other international students, friend-family activities and international projects and themed weeks.

As a student enrolled in this degree programme, you will have the opportunity to apply for a double degree at Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences in Germany.  If accepted, you will spend a full academic year at Ostfalia UAS and get a degree certificate from both TAMK and Ostfalia UAS on completion of your double degree.

Co-operation with other parties

The degree programme has a lot of national and international cooperation partners, including universities and research institutions, NGOs, and companies. The studies include several company visits to see the processes and sites important to the profession. Project studies, practical training and thesis projects are mainly done in cooperation with partners and businesses. The degree programme is also active in RDI projects where multidisciplinary partners are important co-workers.

Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK), Tampere University of Technology (TUT) and the University of Tampere (UTA) will form a joint university community in 2019. The new university complex offers both academic and professional degrees.

Closer cooperation is already pursued by offering all degree students at TAMK, TUT and UTA the possiblity to complement their degree with cross-institutional studies from a joint selection of over 300 courses from autumn 2016 onwards.
