Pepper is a social humanoid robot who makes contact with people by speak and movement. Social robots are multifunctional and they can be used, for example, in tasks like teaching and customer service.

– At this point, Pepper knows simple communication such as introducing himself/herself. Later on, we will study what other things Pepper is capable to do, says Mira Grönvall, Head of Degree Programme in Business Information Systems.

– We already know that Pepper can dance or learn some sign language. The robot can also learn to recognize people by their personal features, adds Taru Lehtimäki, Senior Lecturer in Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care.

The idea of our own social robot rose in the collaboration of the Degree Programme in Business Information Systems and the Degree Programme in Nursing and Health Care. During next autumn, Pepper will participate in various study modules and thesis works at TAMK. The robot will also travel outside TAMK's campus and bring delight to our working life partners.

– We hope that Pepper will be in active use in the future. TAMK's students and staff are most welcome to say hello to Pepper at C-building. Also, feel free to comment or share new ideas for using Pepper, Grönvall encourages.
