Toni Pippola – On the crest of the wave in game industry

TAMK's educational game studio has talented students who also implement chargeable game projects for enterprises.

In February Pippola participated in the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. The conference is one of the largest annual events in the game industry with approximately 30,000 participants.

Senior Lecturer Toni Pippola from the Degree Programme in Business Information Systems has alongside teaching actively cooperated with enterprises since 2013. Pippola and his students have implemented several game projects for e.g. Yle, the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame, Moomin Museum, Savings Bank Museum in Hämeenlinna, Rautaruukki, Cargotec, and SanomaPro.

The projects range from educational games to entertaining game simulations and game solutions which represent and support the customer's operation in the service context or on the website. Some games have also been published in application stores (Google Play and App Store).

– In TAMK's educational game studio it is easy to find the right students to complete the customers' game projects. I know their core competences, personalities and backgrounds and thus I can map the best person for the customer's needs. My role is to spar the students towards a good-quality and practical game solution and take care that the studio has the needed resources to implement the project.

Standard stays high

Pippola believes in student participation and working life based operation instead of the traditional teaching.

It is great to notice that a new group of game production students begins every year and surprises with their potential and competence. In this continuously developing and changing field it is essential that students understand the importance of developing themselves and their competence.

What does enterprise cooperation give to you?

– I am sussed in the changing needs of the IT field and get nice change in my teaching work. The enterprise cooperation increases my expertise and makes the teaching more working life oriented and topical. You cannot stay on the crest of the wave if you do not have contacts to enterprises and working life.
