Student Story - Yuliya Nesterenko
Home country: Kazakhstan
What are you currently doing: Digital Marketing Specialist and Demola Facilitator at New Factory, Tampere.
How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?
The journey has begun long before I started my education at TAMK. Born and raised in Kazakhstan, I've always dreamed of pursuing my passions and building my life in Scandinavia. Finland, for many reasons, seemed to be an intelligent choice. Firstly, I studied 1 year at MAMK (Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences), and later, seeking for new opportunities, I transferred to TAMK.
What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?
I have an unconditional love for Finland, its culture, its people, its traditions, its nature. My opinions in this respect might sound a bit biased because I'm planning to settle down in Tampere for the rest of my life, and there is simply nothing I would change. But if I must emphasize some qualities, that would be absolute trust in processes and people, national values and the power of silence. Finland is a truly incredible place, not similar to any other spot in the world. It is both welcoming and alienating. But like in everything, it's the matter of personal attitude. Finland has made me more open-minded, diverse, transparent and courageous, and I can't feel any happier.
In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?
The 3 most important things I have learned during my studies at TAMK are:
a). How to work on projects in teams that consist of people from various backgrounds, ambitions and goals.
b). How to accept constructive feedback as a unique tool for improvements and not a harsh criticism.
c). How to apply theoretical knowledge to the practical project work when communicating with real local-based companies.
I would say, that the most crucial skills I obtained at TAMK are the skills to learn and to work hard. I wouldn't be where I am at the moment if it wasn't for TAMK, its teaching, its practical approach. I gained a valuable experience because learning by the book it's so much different from practical things. And TAMK students focus on the last one.
How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?
Fancy premises, thorough library, diverse teacher unit, personal teacher-supervisor, flexible study plan, online materials, project case flow, access to events, good food and positive atmosphere. I have managed to build my own study plan, graduate in less than 3 years, work in teams with over 30 different nationalities, successfully complete over 25 projects, learn to pitch on the stage/in front of audience, improve my English and many other things that I have probably didn't even realize yet.
What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?
If you're willing to make your 3,5 years of studies meaningful, get references from innovative projects and internships, have tremendous fun with multicultural study groups and learn how businesses work nowadays, TAMK International Business Programme is meant for you! TAMK is not just a university. It's an opportunity. Grasp it!
