What you're currently doing: Degree student within TAMK's International Business programme
How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?
I have studied my first year at another university of applied sciences in Finland and transferred to TAMK for my second year. Compared to the previous school, TAMK has more interesting projects based on real business connections, more partner universities for exchange studies which makes the campus an even more international environment, and several degree programmes which could be interesting for me (such as Media and Arts).
What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?
Tampere itself is an attractive city known as "the best student city in Finland" and it is totally true. Not only for fun student life, but there are many companies looking for young talents by collaborating with universities through projects and business events. I am really glad to be able to study in Tampere so far. In addition, it is easy to travel to Helsinki and thus easy to travel around Europe. I traveled to many places around Europe during my second year to meet my friends.
Finland is a diverse country where most of the locals are kind and friendly. The Finnish stereotype is not really true if you'd ask me. What I like the most about being here is the relaxing lifestyle and the breathtaking nature. I have never been extremely stressed out with school work because nature and friends are always there to make me feel relaxed.
Schools, and even government are encouraging the entrepreneur spirit, and that is another fact that I like about Finland. Government funding is accessible and there are a variety of events for students and start-ups. I participated to one of the biggest events called "Slush" as a student volunteer and it was a spectacular experience. I was very inspired with the start-up speeches and with the other volunteering students I met there.
In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?
I decided to study in Finland right after my high school graduation. I wanted to brush up my English skills and learn business by doing it. Tampere University of Applied Sciences offers English degree programmes for students from all over the world in a very practical way, which will surely broaden my path to the future! I really like the study method at TAMK, which is learning by doing with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. The learning environment is really diverse, where you can experience teamwork with students from different cultures 24/7. This is something you cannot experience back in my home country.
If I could share my most recent plan, I am going to a business school in Paris for my third year autumn semester. My goal is to be able to express my opinions in fluent French by the end of the semester. I have studied French for more than three years now and I just need to put myself in such an environment where I need to use the French language. I am so excited about this because Paris is even more diverse than Tampere, and it's the city of arts and culture!
How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?
Support for students is surprisingly amazing here. Tuition fee was free for non-EU students this year. Even though the law has now changed in regards to the international student tuition, I think it's still quite a small amount compared to other countries. Students get discounts almost everywhere, which is surprising for me, as Japan is not really a student friendly country in terms of financial aspects.
I really appreciate the student support system at TAMK. E-learning sources are very convenient, the teachers are very close to students, there are many chances to retake courses or exams, and there are delicious school lunches. Since I came here as a transferred student, I was a bit worried how I can catch up with the second year students. However, I didn't have big problems with accreditation and so on thanks to our amazing student counsellor.
What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?
