Student Story - Percy Hevor

What are you currently doing? Registered Nurse at Laajasalo Kotihoito, Helsinki.
How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?
I actually got to know about TAMK after I came to study at the University of Tampere. My department was on the same street with TAMK, and we even shared some departments. I used to visit TAMK's library and their cafeteria during my studies. I liked the study environment and facilities at TAMK, and I did not think twice about studying there when the opportunity came.
I decided to study Nursing because I wanted to do something professional and health-related that involves direct contact with the people I want to care for, and also involving their families in the care process. I wanted to be part of a team of professionals including physicians and physiotherapists who come together to make decisions about the care provided to patients. I was also drawn to it because of the need for healthcare professionals all over the world and availability of jobs after graduating.
When I decided to pursue a degree in Nursing, few schools in Finland could rival TAMK in that field, so I was excited about the prospect of being a student there. There was also no need to move away from Tampere, a city that I had settled in so well.
What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?
Tampere was like a home away from home. It is one of the best cities for an international student to settle in for studies quickly. The city is neither too small nor too big to find whatever one needs. It is also a city that is open to multiculturalism. I like Finland as a whole for its efforts in education and the peace it provides to everyone.
In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?
Even with my previous degrees in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics, I knew studying Nursing was going to be challenging even more so when I realised it was going to be in the Finnish language.
Nursing has helped me put all that I studied previously in a more professional way in assisting patients with their recovery process. The studies made me appreciate and value life and the importance and role of a family in the recovery process of a patient. I have become more conscious of my health now than ever before, and I presently translate that into the safety and well-being of my clients. As a father of two, I immediately applied at home the knowledge gained during my studies for the care of my children.
How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?
TAMK has a group of professional teachers who make sure the students are given the necessary platform to excel. They ensure that everyone who successfully graduates from TAMK is ready and well equipped for the challenges of working life.
What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?
I will encourage anyone who considers studying at TAMK to go ahead and make it a reality. TAMK has a great learning environment. The school is located close to the university hospital making it easy for clinical practices. It has a good library for individual or group studies, and from there, you may also access University of Tampere's library.
The school is not far from the city centre making transportation to school easy. There are many student apartments which makes it easy to quickly and comfortably settle down for studies. Tampere city is a great place to be as a student because it has a lot of places to relax and have fun with friends.
