How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?

At my university we were given a choice of universities and countries that we could choose to study in for our Erasmus year. I spent a little while researching some places and Finland was somewhere that really intrigued me, it wasn't somewhere I would have thought to go on holiday and Tampere was accessible by air and close by to Helsinki. With the promise that there would be plenty of snow in the winter I had made up my mind!

What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?

Finland has to be one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. There was plenty of things to do in Tampere and I enjoyed the outdoor healthy lifestyle. Despite the -30 degrees temperatures at some points, I loved the snow and being able to walk across the frozen lake by my accommodation in the winter. Needless to say Finland is home to the best chocolate, cakes and ice cream!

In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?

A lot of the modules and advice I was given at TAMK have provided me with a good business grounding, the education system in Finland was fantastic and much more focused than lectures in the UK. It was here that I was also introduced to the advantages of LinkedIn and where I chose to start my blog which has helped me obtain the job I am in now. From a personal point of view, my year abroad let me grow in ways that I did not think possible, I gained independence, became culturally aware and improved my communication skills. It has shaped who I am today and prepared me for my working life.

How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?

From the very minute I arrived in Tampere, I was met by my mentor who helped me throughout the first few weeks to settle in to my new life in Tampere. I was also enrolled onto a basic Finnish course which proved invaluable to help me get by during my stay. We were encouraged to join in with various activities throughout the year, as well as organised trips to places such as Nokia headquarters. My lecturers at TAMK were always happy to help by email and fully supportive throughout my year. From start to finish I always felt like I had someone at TAMK to help me, and that really did make being miles away from home feel much more reassuring.

What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?

Go for it!! Finland is a very unknown place to many and by taking the plunge I was opened to amazing opportunities and experiences that I will always be thankful for. My stay in Tampere and TAMK really did feel like a dream, and I would do it all again in a heartbeat! If you want to make life long friendships, experience fantastic education and live in a beautiful country then studying at TAMK is the best university for you!
