Student Story-Kimmo Syrjänen
Home country: Finland
What are you currently doing: Leading enterprise and information systems risk management in HERE, the global location company owned by Daimler, BMW and Audi, Germany.
How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?
My wife wanted to switch from university to applied education and was accepted to the first BBA program in TAMK. During the process I found out that TAMK provided an opportunity to focus on business in Asia. Asian cultures have always fascinated me and as I had no prior higher education, I saw a great opportunity to study business in an interesting context.
What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?
As a Finn I am biased to tell you what is great about Finland, so please visit and experience it by yourself! Generally speaking, things just work in Finland. "Manse", as locals sometimes call Tampere, is located between two great lakes and offers modern living for party and sporty people, techies and nature lovers equally. The one thing I miss from Tampere is the locals' serene attitude towards living.
In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?
I got a very good foundation for business management but the specialization to business in Asia, especially China, with combination of optional studies in information technology was a launch pad to my successful career. Graduation from TAMK gave me an opportunity to complete Master level studies and go all the way to grad school, where I am currently doing PhD in Information Systems Science.
How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?
One of my dearest memory is the interview by the program lead. My high school grades were a lot below average, but with a shared vision of China and my clear goal setting, I got an opportunity that changed my life. TAMK gave me all the support I needed with travel funding, course arrangements and networking and in return, I met the goals we planned. To put it shortly, TAMK committed to me as much as I committed to TAMK.
What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?
Choose the field you want to excel in, learn the additional skill that has near future demand and capture the opportunities TAMK offers you. With this blend, you will have a great future!
