Student story - Gaël White Njeukam

International Business

Home country: Germany
What are you currently doing: My team and I are currently building the best social innovation service, called Muxuni™ for Tampere and Finland. At the same time, I am writing my thesis.

How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?

After graduating from Tredu, it was clear for me to continue with studying Business at a University located in Tampere. Several universities' representatives came to Tredu for advertising their study programmes. After listening and checking all those offers, I must say that I was very impressed by TAMK's promotions and study possibilities.

What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?

Tampere city is a perfect place to live and study. I moved from Bremen (Germany), which has approximately twice as many residents as Tampere. I am a big soccer fan since Bremen is a soccer city. It took and still takes time to get used to Tampere as an ice hockey city. I have a weakness for fishing and Finland is a perfect country to carry out my passion.

But if we look at it from a business perspective, Finland gives you a chance and support to fulfil your business ideas throughout sunny and rainy days. I must admit that the first two years weren't easy. I got a culture shock. I realised and quickly understood that Finns are very shy and silent people. And I am exactly the contrary. The weird part is, Finns who had been travelling around the world are completely open-minded people while those who had never left Scandinavia have a hard and closed heart and a difficult character. All in all, I quickly adapted, and now I am surrounded by people who have the same goals as I do.

In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?

From my first day of school at the age of five, I noticed that I don't need all those things they're teaching me at school. I visited three high schools, and my grades were bad. But in one thing I was very gifted: creating networks. And now I can say I have success and can ring many doorbells. Not because of being handsome but as a result of the contacts I have and still making.

Before I started my studies at TAMK, I thought I knew something about business. After meeting several teachers, for example, Päivi Mayor or Mauri Grönroos, I would say that I did not know anything about business. TAMK is helping me with learning and studying more about the meaning of business.

Finland is a great country to live, but only if you have a job. It is not easy to find a job without speaking Finnish. In Germany for example, it is possible to find small jobs without language skills. Many foreigners live and study in Finland and going back home after graduating. I guess the reason is that they are unlucky and frustrated seeking for a job and the only way is to go back home or somewhere else.

How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?

During my study at TAMK, all my needs were supported. All teachers are always ready to listen to my issues or my own business plan (Muxuni™). Teachers help me every time I need them. I don't know how other universities in Finland are like, but the organisational structure here at TAMK is very good.

What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?

I grew up in Germany. In Tampere, I started my family, and at TAMK is where I became an adult. Everyone who is seeking for networking opportunities, TAMK is the right place to be.
