Student Story - Carolin Buttner
Media and Arts
Home country: Germany
What are you currently doing: Music Booking Agent/ Event Producer at Nem Agency, Tampere
How did you find out about TAMK and what made you choose it for your studies?
I have actually been working in a photo studio in Tampere as an intern before I started my studies at TAMK. When my internship was about to end, I tried to figure out possibilities on how I could permanently move to Finland. Studying has always been an option for me back then.
I started to research about universities in Tampere and stumbled over TAMK. The Interactive Media programme sounded just like the perfect choice for me - as my passions have always been Graphic Design and Photography.
What did you like most about Tampere and Finland?
Tampere feels like home far away from home. It is neither too big nor too small. You simply have everything in here. People also seem to be more relaxed as in Helsinki – and they are definitely friendlier.
Also Tampere is the heart of Finnish rock'n'roll. If you are passionate about rock and live music: this is the place to be!
Finland in general is a beautiful country. The nature is absolutely stunning! You have white nights in the summer and pure darkness in the winter. You either like it or not: I am simply loving it. And believe me: if you see the Northern Lights for the very first time, you understand what I am talking about.
I also appreciate the Finnish mentality. As a German, I am used to be stressed 24/7 and hard to please. I know it sounds tough, but that's just the German way of living. However, Finns still value time with family and friends. It is important to them to spend time with their beloved ones after school or work. Luckily, I noticed that I became pretty Finnish myself in the past years and I absolutely love being more relaxed nowadays.
In what ways have your studies contributed to your professional and personal life?
When it comes to business and personal life, I definitely became more independent and grew a lot in the past four years. There is simply one reason for that: in TAMK you are able to learn things by doing.
Instead of sitting every day for hours in some classroom, you are allowed to work in many different projects. Personally for me this is the best way to achieve new knowledge: making mistakes and learning from it. You get to know your strengths and weaknesses.
Not to forget: I met fantastic and super talented people in the past years including other students, teachers or business experts.
How has TAMK supported your needs as a student?
When I applied to the Interactive Media programme, I put my focus on Event Production and Management. Unfortunately, in my first study year I was barely able to take any related courses. I am really thankful that teachers in TAMK supported me and gave me later on the possibility to attend also courses from the Music Production path to attain the knowledge I wished for.
Also, in the Media campus, we were able to rent good technique-equipment for our projects or work in the photo studio at any time.
What would you say to anyone considering studying at TAMK?
In my opinion, each applicant should exactly know what he/she wants to achieve with his/her studies. There is no need to apply for the school just to see what will happen. In TAMK, you follow and work for your dream - while getting support from teachers, students and other business experts.
