President of the Republic of Finland confirms Tampere3-related legislative proposals

The new higher education community in Tampere will be established at the beginning of 2019. The University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology will merge to create a new foundation-based university that also becomes the main owner of TAMK.

The President of the Republic of Finland confirmed the Tampere3-related legislative proposals, which include the amendments to the Universities Act and Universities of Applied Sciences Act as well as the Act on the Implementation of the Universities Act, on Tuesday, 19 December.

The University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology will merge to create the new foundation-based Tampere University at the beginning of 2019. Their activities, personnel, students and assets will be transferred to the new university. 

The new foundation-based university will become the main owner of Tampere University of Applied Sciences, when the City of Tampere assigns its shares, 87 per cent in the university of applied sciences, to Tampere University Foundation. The shares will be assigned in February 2018.

The operations of the new higher education community will be based on the existing research and educational activities of the three strong higher education institutions and their novel combinations.

As set forth in the Act on the Implementation of the Universities Act, the Boards of the University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology will appoint a transitional Board for the new university, so that it can start operating on 1 January 2018 at the latest.

The transitional Board will appoint the university's first President and decide on the number of members in its first multi-member administrative body, namely the Academic Board, in accordance with the Universities Act. The Academic Board must start its operations by 1 April 2018. The Academic Board appoints the first Board of the new university.

- The strategy of the higher education community, the university regulations and the faculty structure have been carefully prepared and widely discussed throughout the autumn semester. The working groups and project teams focusing on research, education and support services are doing an excellent job to ensure that the operations of the new community being as smoothly as possible, says Chairwoman of Tampere University Foundation's Board Marja Makarow.
