Educational Leadership – a blended distance program began

The Master in Educational Leadership is a blended distance program, which is implemented almost completely online.

The Educational Leadership programme focuses on developing leadership and management in different organisations working with learning and teaching.

The programme began in September with an intensive week at TAMK. According to Senior Lecturer Mark Curcher and Principal Lecturer Päivi Mayor, who planned the programme, cooperative online learning calls for a joint week for students to group properly and learn to use the online learning tools.

After the intensive week, the programme continues online in smaller groups.

– Based on our experiences, it is possible to win up to 2-3 months with an intensive week compared with meeting and learning merely online. Online learning is most effective when people know and trust in each other, Päivi Mayor says.

The range of students is very international. There are students from Australia, Japan, United Arab Emirates, England, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, Ireland and Hungary in addition to Finland. The students are teachers interested in leadership or other experts and superiors working with learning on almost all educational levels from the day care centre to university or in the business world.

– The programme started really well. We had plenty of joint sessions in the first week, for example, we cooked Finnish food, such as Karelian pasties, in TAMK's Catering Studio. The students also visited different learning environments of our cooperation schools in the Tampere region.

The next intensive period for all the students takes place in January.

– We are interested in seeing how our international online master's degree programme works in practice. In January when we meet the students again, we will hear how the online studies of the autumn have gone.

The programme lasts for 1.5 – 2.5 years. Next application period to the programme is in January 2018.
