Dean Antti Lönnqvist appointed as temporary chair of the new Tampere University’s Academic Board

The Transitional Board of the new Tampere University has appointed Antti Lönnqvist, dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Tampere, as temporary chair of the new university's first Academic Board. Head of Education Kirsi Reiman from Tampere University of Technology was tasked with preparing matters that come before the Academic Board.

The Academic Board of the new Tampere University is chaired by the provost. As the new university's first provost has not yet been appointed, the transitional provisions included in the University Regulations dictate that the Transitional Board appoints a temporary chair for the Academic Board.

The Chair and Vice Chair of the Transitional Board selected two persons from among the vice presidents/vice rectors and deans of the two merging universities for an interview for the position of the Academic Board's temporary chair. The Board found the particular strength of Antti Lönnqvist, who is currently dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Tampere, to be his familiarity with both universities. Before joining the University of Tampere, Lönnqvist held a professorship at Tampere University of Technology.

In a special meeting on 10 April 2018, the Board appointed Dean Antti Lönnqvist as the temporary chair of the Academic Board. He will occupy the position until the new university's first provost takes up their appointment.

"The Academic Board will hold a key role in the development of the new university over the next few months. I'm delighted to contribute to the process in my position as temporary chair. I will do my best to ensure that the Academic Board can start its work and decision-making processes effectively and in a constructive spirit," says Lönnqvist.

The Board appointed Kirsi Reiman, head of education at Tampere University of Technology, as the official in charge of preparing matters that come before the Academic Board until the new University's first President decides on the appointment. The same official also serves as the secretary at the Academic Board's meetings.

As stipulated in the Universities Act, the Academic Board is a multi-member administrative body that represents the entire university community. The Academic Board of the new Tampere University comprises 20 members with voting rights, including the chair.

The Academic Board is scheduled to hold its first meeting on 19 April. Afterwards the Academic Board and the Transitional Board will convene their first round-table meeting.
