Nursing studies fulfil all expectations

Nursing

Erika Tuhola, Finland

“When I was a first-grader in primary school, we were asked to draw ourselves in our future profession. I draw a picture of myself as a nurse. Though I dreamed about many careers from biologist to stewardess during my school years, it appeared to me during the last year in the general upper secondary school that nursing was the career option that interested me the most.

I chose nursing for three different reasons. First, I wanted a profession where I can help people in their problems. Secondly, I have always been interested in how the body and mind works. Thirdly, nurses have good job situation both in Finland and worldwide.

Degree Programme in Nursing was an easy choice for me: the possibility to learn a profession and improve my English skills both at the same time. I’m originally from Tampere region, so TAMK was a clear choice as my first option.

Nursing studies have really fulfilled my expectations. I like the way nurses view human beings as an entity with physical, psychological and social needs. Theoretical studies are the ground for practical learning and clinical trainings that are an important part of the studies. Clinical trainings are a great opportunity to practise and learn new skills. The best thing is the people I met during my studies, both the nurses and patients. I have participated in care of people from neonates to one-hundred-year-olds and learnt a lot from experienced nurses. Not to mention the fellow students I have made friends with during my studies!

In the future, I want to work as a nurse in an intensive care unit. Hopefully, I will be able to work some years abroad, maybe in Great Britain or Australia. And, of course, I want to develop as a professional nurse, gain work experience and learn new things everyday and maybe even continue my studies in a university after graduation.”
