IB Bachelor's thesis or project

Practical solutions for company problems

The Bachelor's thesis is a project of 15 credit units. It can be a planning or development task, research, a product or a guide done for a company or a community. The thesis is written following the practices of scientific reporting and with emphasis on practical solutions for company problems.

Writing the Bachelor's thesis will take from four to max six months, depending on the topic and level of difficulty. The main idea in the thesis is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, and in this way to produce topical solutions for company needs.

The students find the topic of the thesis themselves. Very often students make the final decision about the topic during their practical training . The Bachelor's thesis can be done as individual or pair work, and it can be multidisciplinary in nature. The topic of the thesis must be related to the student's field of study, and preferably be linked to the student's chosen specialisation module in the BBA programme.

The IB Bachelor's thesis process should be started during the third year of studies at the latest, preferably in connection with the work placement.

The IB Bachelor's Thesis process

  1. Compulsory course: Final Thesis Practicalities and Research Methods, 2 cr.
  2. After discussions with the company you write the thesis for, you will draft a topic analysis of your thesis.
  3. After returning the topic analysis to the head of programme, you will be assigned a thesis coach from TAMK BBA.
  4. After completing the thesis, you will take the Comprehensive Competence Exam to prove your maturity in the thesis topic as well as showing your communication skills in your mother tongue (if Finnish), or fluency of your English.
  5. Assessment of the thesis project.

The Final Thesis Practicalities and Research Methods course introduces the student to the practical issues involved in the Bachelor's thesis process, and covers the possible forms which the thesis might take. The concept of applied research is presented, and the main research methods are explained. This compulsory course must be completed before the student starts the writing process under the guidance of an assigned supervisor.
