The English Degree Programme in Social Services aims at developing the students’ knowledge and skills in working in multicultural communities and society, with the aim of promoting clients’ social inclusion and opportunities for equal participation. The degree programme gives the qualifications to work in multicultural work environments.

The aim of the Degree Programme in Social Services is to provide the students with a profound understanding of the multidimensional nature of wellbeing and its individual, community-based and societal interconnections and processes. The Bachelor’s Degree in Social Services provides the students with the knowledge of social welfare and social services. The students learn social work skills in client services with individuals, families, groups and communities. Besides covering the core skills in social work and social services,  the programme includes management, networking and team work studies.

The core nature of social work is client-oriented and empowering. The studies emphasise the integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Reflective practice, self-evaluation and service quality development are some of the key elements of the programme. Participatory, collaborative, and experiential learning methods are used throughout the studies. The students also go through a period of practical training, where they deepen their professional skills and learn to create contacts with working life.

The students can further develop their skills in particular areas through elective studies  For example, those interested in having the Finnish qualification to work in day care as a kindergarten teacher, can take an elective  module in early education and family work.

Employment opportunities Social Services graduates can work in the field of social services as social advisors, social counsellors and supervisors. The social service fields include e.g. working with immigrant families, child protection, disability care services, elderly care services, community work, and employment services.
