Studying in media programme is practical and independent

Nelli Norman, Finland

I started my studies in the Degree Programme in Media in August 2009. I graduated as a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing and communications the same year, and after working for a while I wanted to develop my skills further in communications, media and graphic design.

I have always dreamed of a creative profession where I could combine my business knowledge and the graphic industry, so the new media programme seemed like the right place. The opportunity to study in English felt interesting since I am interested in internationality also in the future. TAMK was a natural choice because after studying business here, I knew it to be a good place to study.

Studying in the media programme is very practical and independent. We learn mostly through different projects and exercises, not so much by sitting in lectures. For this reason, it is very important to be active and take initiatives in starting projects and participating in them. We cooperate a lot with each other, so you learn to know your fellow students well. Both teachers and fellow students are more like supporters in everyone finding their ”own thing” rather than just sources of information.

The media programme offers a chance to focus on graphic design, game design or project management. I am most interested in focusing on the graphic and project management side, and I hope to find a career as a marketing manager, art director or entrepreneur.

Studying media has already opened great opportunities for me, since I had the opportunity to conduct my practical training already during the first year, and I also got a summer job in marketing and graphic design. I am going to continue in my summer job in the autumn part-time along with my studies, so especially in this economical situation I consider myself very lucky. I have not once regretted my choice of studies.
