Teaching and Guidance in Information Searching Skills

The courses on information searching skills included in the curriculum include library info, basic information searching skills and advanced information searching skills. You are welcome to participate in the workshops or a net course, and to receive individual guidance on the subject of your thesis or other subjects.

Courses of information searching skills included in the curriculum

1) Library Info
Aim: Student knows how to use the TAMK library services and he/she is acquainted with general and field related eResources.
Contents: Flexible and effective use of TAMK library services. Hints about the use of eResources.
Directed at: New students.
Time: Beginning of studies
Assessment: Individually for each study course; in cooperation with the teacher. Incorporates general feedback that the Library and Information Services receive from students participating in the Orientation Study Course.
Implementation: The library information specialists are responsible for group instruction. Library visits are guided by a student tutor or an information specialist.

2) Professional information searching skills
Aim: Student knows how to search for information and evaluate sources systematically.
Contents: Effective and systematic search for information. Information sources related to a study course. Evaluation of information sources.
Directed to: Students working on their thesis or other professional studies.
Time: 1st or 2nd year of studies
Assessment: Individually for each study course; in cooperation with the teacher.
Implementation: Group teaching by an information specialist and a teacher.

3) Advanced information searching skills
Aim: Student can effectively and independently search for information plus critically evaluate information sources.
Contents: Updating, advancing and adapting of information search skills. Critical approach to information sources.
Directed to: Students doing their thesis or other projects.
Time: 2nd to 4th year of studies
Assessment: Individually for each study course; in cooperation with the teacher.
Implementation: Group teaching by an information specialist and a teacher.


Net course as optional study (only in finnish)

Sources of Information Net Course (3 credits)
Sources of Information is a virtual course of 3 credits on a critical approach to information searching and the nature of knowledge. The course contains no contact teaching.
